NEW CYCLE POSTS FOR HARBOUR WALKERS - Feb 2011

Visitors to Nutbourne can now safely arrive with two wheels rather than four. Thanks to the Friends of Chichester Harbour, three cycle posts have been installed, providing a safe facility for leaving bicycles.

Situated near the public footpath at Farm Lane, the three oak posts can take up to 12 bicycles between them. These posts complete a project started two years ago by outgoing chairman Martin Rhodes. Martin, a keen cyclists and walker saw the need for secure places for people to leave their bicycles whilst enjoying walks on the Chichester Harbour footpaths. Martin said, ‘the project has been a challenge but I am thrilled to have secured 10 sites throughout the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Arriving by bike and then walking the picturesque shoreline paths makes for a perfect day out.’

The Chairmanship has now been passed onto Bernard Clarke. Bernard, who is  a keen sailor, said, ‘the role of the Friends of Chichester Harbour will become ever more important as the Conservancy faces cuts to its environmental budget over the coming years. Ideally the Friends of Chichester Harbour will grow in strength in order to keep pace with the task that we face.’

Cycle posts which are free for the public to use are situated at;

  • Farm Lane, Nutbourne;
  • East Head, West Wittering Beach car park;
  • Fishbourne Church car park;
  • entrance to Salterns Copse, Chichester Marina;
  • Apuldram Church car park;
  • Bosham Ferry parking area, Smugglers Lane;
  • Chidham - a set of posts at each east bound bus stop on the A259;
  • near the Scout Hut, Prinsted;
  • North Common, Hayling Island;
  • RNLI Lifeboat Station at Hayling Island.

The posts have been paid for by the Friends of Chichester Harbour and installed and maintained by Chichester Harbour Conservancy.
