WORK PARTIES

Work is supervised by one or usually two of the Conservancy's Rangers. Tools, strong gloves and instruction are provided. Work is from 1000 to 1200 with a short break for free tea or coffee and biscuits. Come and join us. It is fun, you will visit parts of the harbour you would not normally visit, learn new skills and be able to chat to the Rangers to learn from their extensive knowledge of birds, flora and fauna

Common taks:

  • Tree Planting - about 12,000 saplings are planted each year to rejuvenate or place new hedges and trees in the AONB
  • Lazy-dogging - a special tool for pulling plants out by the roots. We manage some meadows to remove unwanted plants to benefit those we wish to encourage. Fishbourne Meadows is an example where Southern Marsh Orchids flourish due to this work
  • Tree Care - coppicing or thinning trees in woods, pruning and clearing competing growth round saplings. Clearing bushes and branches from footpaths
  • Stream Management - cutting back overgrown reed banks and clearing debris
  • - using scientific instruments to test the quality of six streams flowing into the harbour. Also documenting a sample of stream life activity
  • Beach Clean - litter pickers and sacks provided
  • Pot Luck - short notice jobs decided at the time
  • Envelope Stuffing - to help the Harbour staff, we occasionally put notices and enclosures into envelopes. The biggest of these tasks occurs in January when over 10,000 harbour dues invoices and associated papers need to be sent to boat owners. We also stuff envelopes for the Friends newsletter and then arrange hand distribution of those in the area and postal distribution for other members around the country or abroad.
