Activities

The Friends of Chichester Harbour help the Conservancy staff to manage the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to keep it naturally beautiful.

As a Friend you can join work parties in a variety of tasks. We meet one morning weekly for activities such as :

  • Coppicing woodland
  • Planting hedges and trees
  • “Lazy-dogging” - keeping wild orchid meadows clear of rampant opposition
  • Managing reed beds
  • Clearing paths
  • Bird Hide maintenance
  • Beach clearance

Or less physical tasks:

  • Taking scientific readings and measurements for monitoring streams
  • Envelope stuffing sessions for newsletters and other communications
  • Delivering newsletters
  • Manning publicity stands at local events

Helping Manage the Friends:

  • Committee work
  • Organising events
  • Volunteering specialist knowledge and experience

The Friends also provide volunteers for Chichester Harbour Conservancy activities such as:

  • Harbour Watch scheme – monitoring and reporting monthly on sections of shoreline
  • Bird counts
  • Wildlife and habitat monitoring
  • Other surveys and monitoring
  • Education programme
  • Envelope stuffing of over ten thousand harbour dues notices and other communications

To take part in any of the above you need to join the Friends of Chichester Harbour.

As a member you do not have to take part in any activities. Subscriptions and your donations allow us to finance the work parties and many more projects. Bigger membership numbers gives us a bigger block vote to lobby local and national authorities, protecting this unique heritage.
